Complex Dilemmas in Group Psychotherapy

Complex Dilemmas in Group Psychotherapy, Motherwell, L. & Shay, J.J. (eds). Translation: Alkyoni Tsegkou. Greek Edition Edited by: Natasa Karapostoli, Maroula Mitroutsikou. Athens: ARMOS Publications, 2017.

From the back cover:

The group confronts the therapist with many situations, concerns and, ultimately, decisions that are unique to the practice of group psychotherapy. The accompanying book, Complex Dilemmas in Group Psychotherapy, includes advice and experiences from the most prominent group therapists worldwide (over fifty) and has been edited by two leading thinkers and professionals. Within its pages, clinicians will find expert guidance on some of the most difficult issues faced by group therapists; it will help them by providing a range of practical techniques to facilitate their work as well as a deeper and broader understanding of the leading ideas that underpin the practice of successful group therapy.

Group therapy is a complex process. Despite the fact that the first edition of this book was widely acclaimed and is used to train therapists, the dilemmas we all face remain. We continue to facilitate groups that function well for a period of time, but then suddenly go off the rails. Some clients continue to monopolize the sessions with anger, accusations, incessant talking, and disrupt the discussion. Some question our competence, come to sessions drunk, and abruptly end the therapy. Groups that were once enthusiastic and vibrant can, over time, become stagnant. A group member may even die, for example by suicide. Although group therapy has been an important part of our practice for many years, we feel anxious, confused, and dread the next meeting with our groups. How can we understand what happened and what should we do?
