OPEN PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTER (1980-2007). Activities and Whims

OPEN PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTER (1980-2007). Activities and Whims, Ioannis K. Tsegos & Associates. Edited by: Natasa Karapostoli, Maroula Mitroutsikou, Gioula Pantou. Athens: Alternative Editions, 2007.

From the back cover:

People’s deviant behaviors are usually not acceptable; deviations from the established ways of dealing with them are also considered unacceptable. The Open Psychotherapy Centre was, and is to some extent, a deviation, perhaps because he believed and believes that deviations are integral and very useful characteristics of nature. This deviation, however, of the OPC, was not the result of deliberation but … of an unconsidered reaction; for this reason, by friends but also by us ourselves, the project is recognized as “foolish”. However, this “reactivity” of the beginning, the folly or deviation lasts 27 years.

The contributors to any project that has been carried out over these 27 years do not consider themselves obligated to give any reference, or reason, to any “official” or guild direction, beyond those who supported the project with their trust.

Of course, there is the willingness to express “we did it”, as well as the pride that this achievement was achieved without external assistance, but only thanks to the intrinsic motivation of the contributors and not due to any financial or other enticement. If there was any “allure” in the soul, it was perhaps the vague expectation of some “difficult truth” of a small Agora of stubborn “sophists”.

All accounts with the necessary historical retrospects, especially when made by the founders and leaders, inevitably have a self-congratulatory content. Much more so when these retrospections extend over a considerable period of time, such as 27 years …
