18 ANO IN ITS 40 YEARS OF OPERATION has proven in practice that \u201cthere is an alternative\u201d, that \u201cthe drug addict can get well\u201d, as long as he finds the therapeutic program that suits him. Thousands of addicted individuals have gotten well, have found their way in life, a path of emancipation, creation and struggle. That is why 18 ANO became – along with the other dry, public and free addiction programs – a target of government policy. That is why the government rushed to pass, in the middle of the summer, despite the intense reactions of all the institutions and the majority of society, the law that privatizes mental health and addiction, that demolishes 18ANO with its philosophy, that condemns addicted individuals to remain in the squalor of the streets, “invisible”.<\/p>\n

That is why we record the HISTORY OF 18ANO, starting from the first steps in Daphni, in the climate of social upheavals of the Post-Coalition era, of collective struggles, of hopes and denials for a psychiatric reform, truly radical. In the climate of the spread of hard drug use in Greek society and the desperate search by more and more people for a treatment position in the then small 18ANO. In the climate of the “small revolution” attempted by a handful of people, therapists and patients, who managed, through collective struggles, to put their vision into practice and build a model unit with 33 structures throughout Attica, introducing for the first time in Greece special addiction programs, where psychotherapy and art, in their dialectical relationship, become the catalyst in addiction treatment and give amazing results.<\/p>\n

In the PSNA, this resistance gradually took the form of a minority but courageous de-asylum movement, which brought together young psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers and other workers.<\/p>\n

The founding group, without possessing a unified ideology, was inspired by the ideas of May and the vision of revolutionary change in society. Reference points included Freud, Lacan, Marcuse, Sartre, Foucault, Marx, surrealism, the permanent revolution, the anti-asylum movement, Franco Bazzaglia, Felix Guattari, Olivenstein, Laing, Cooper and other thinkers.<\/p>\n
